What is a Blog?

A blog is simply a website that provides information to people. A lot of people need answers to questions and solutions to their problems. For instance, you found this blog (post) because you want to know how to start a blogging business in Nigeria today.

Most of the time, whenever we have questions, we simply “ask Google”. However, none of the answers you find on Google are written by Google, they are simply written by bloggers.

6 Steps to Start a Blogging Business in Nigeria

Setting up the Blog

A lot of people think it is difficult to setup a blog. Some even think they need to hire some “gurus” to setup a blog for them. NO, it is not difficult and you don’t need to hire anybody to do it for you.

I will show you a step by step guide that you can follow even if you are not a “techie”.

1. Buy domain name and web hosting

A domain name is the address of your blog. For example, www.bing.com is a domain name. Moreover, a web hosting is the server that will keep all the contents of your blog safe for you on the internet.

I recommend Truehost if you want to buy an affordable domain and web hosting. It is a Nigeria based company. However, if you desire to buy from foreign companies, it’s okay. Some reliable foreign companies you can buy from are Bluehost, Namecheap, Dreamhost, Interserver, Hostinger and Virmach.

You will be required to create an account with your name, email address and other necessary data before you buy. Therefore, buying a domain name and a web hosting plan is the first step on how to start a blogging business in Nigeria right now.

2. Download and Install an SSL Certificate

After buying a domain name and web hosting, you need to get an SSL certificate for your domain name. An SSL certificate is for securing your website so that people won’t get an error message when they visit your blog. You can get a free SSL certificate from Truehost if you buy domain and hosting from them.

3. Install WordPress

Once you carry out the steps above, you will receive an email notification that contains your username and password to sign in to your blog web hosting dashboard.

Login and scroll down until you see an icon with a “W” sign. Click on it to install WordPress.

WordPress is the most widely used and recommended blogging platform worldwide. It is easy to use.

4. Customize the blog by installing a theme

During the WordPress Installation, you will be required to select a theme for your blog. A theme is just like the wallpaper on your phone. It determines how your blog will look like.

Choose the theme that you like best.

5. Download necessary plugins

When you buy a new phone, the first thing you do is to install necessary apps on it. The same thing goes for a blog too. Therefore, plugins are the “apps” that your blog need. After installing WordPress and choosing a theme, you should start downloading and installing essential plugins like Yoast SEO, and Google Analytics.

As a blogger, the Yoast SEO plugin is a must have because it will help you write quality blog posts that will rank high in Google search results.

6. Index your blog with Google

After taking the steps above, it is time to tell Google that you have a new blog and that they should be showing your posts on their search engine.

This is what we call “indexing”. It is the same thing as submitting your sitemap to Google. You only need to do this once and for all.

The video below will guide you on how to do that easily.

Now that your blog is ready, it’s time to start posting articles.

But wait…

Writing Award Winning, Money Making Articles on Your Blog

After creating your blog, don’t just rush into posting articles. Your articles have to be optimized for search engines. We call this Search Engine Optimization (SEO). Therefore, you need to learn SEO once and for all. This is because you don’t want your articles to be buried among the millions of search results on Google. You really should be on the first page of Google if you want to scale your blogging business.

These are the two (2) very important things you need to do before you start posting articles.

Learn SEO

One of the best bloggers out there, Miles Beckler, wrote an in-depth article about SEO. See it here.

Keyword Research

Another most important thing you need to do before writing any blog post is keyword research. I like to call it topic research. Therefore, keyword research is the act of searching for topics that people are searching for online.

You should not just imagine that people are searching for a particular topic. No, rather you have to do your research to know what they are searching for before writing about it.

Some of the tools you can use are KWfinder and SEMRush.

Also, you can use the search tool below to begin your keyword research right now.

As you are doing the keyword research, make sure you look for low competition and long tail keywords. Low competition keywords are topics that are not difficult to rank for on Google. Most times, they are three words and above. For example, a topic like “business” will be difficult to rank for because a lot of big websites out there, including Wikipedia, have written about it already. You do not want to compete with them.

However, a topic like “best business for university students” is more specific and easy to rank for. It is a long tail keyword. You should go for such keywords.

Searcher Intent

Furthermore, before you write a blog post, you should consider what I call searcher intent. Searcher intent is the intention of the person who is searching for a particular topic. This will go a long way in determining how much you make on your blog.

For example, someone who searches for “how to knot a tie” is only looking for a piece of information on how to “tie” a tie. However, another person who searches for “how to buy a phone on Jumia” most likely truly wants to buy a phone.

Therefore, the second topic, “how to buy a phone on Jumia” will be more profitable for you than the first one if you write an article about it.

All you have to do is to join Jumia affiliate program for free and put your affiliate links within that article and you get paid a certain commission by Jumia whenever anyone buys a phone through your link. This is called Affiliate Marketing.

Searcher intent is therefore a very crucial aspect in learning how to start a blogging business in Nigeria right now.

How to Monetize your Blog in Nigeria

There are several ways you can use your blog to make money in Nigeria.

  • You can make money from your blog by joining affiliate programs like Jumia, Expertnaire, Konga, Bluehost and thousands of others. Write articles based on the products you are promoting and leave your affiliate links within those posts. Therefore, whenever a sale is made through your link, you get paid.
  • Another way to use your blog to make money is through Google Adsense Program. If your blog is at least six (6) months old and it has a good number of monthly visitors, you should register for the Google Adsense Program. It is a program that allows Google to place advertisements on your blog and they pay you per click.
  • Selling physical or digital products is another good way to monetize your blog. Therefore, you can advertise your own goods for sale on your blog. It’s a great way to put your business in front of thousands of people around the world.
  • Moreover, you can also sell advertising spaces on your blog. Nairaland uses this method to generate millions of naira monthly. Reach out to individuals and companies to advertise their products on your blog and bill them for it.

Still don’t get how to start a blog by yourself or maybe you need further mentoring, here is a full course on blogging by a former secondary school teacher who now makes at least 250k a month blogging.
